09 Jun

Mothers of LD kids at Murwood ES have teamed with Soul Shoppe facilitator Daniel Bruno to reach out to their school community and help all students grasp what it is like to have a learning disability. Their children have been experiencing bullying at school.

“We hope this [workshop] will help kids have understanding and compassion for the kids who learn differently,” said Leslie Kowitz, who has two sons at Murwood, one with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and one with autism. Read this inspiring article:

Making plans for next year’s projects? Need Extra Supplies & Support?

26 May

www.donorschoose.org  is an awesome website where you can post a classroom project and people can choose to donate to your cause.  Simple.  Need t-shirts or supplies for your student Peacemakers?  Post it up.  Have a specific science fair you would like to host?  Post it up.  Need new technology?  Yep, post it up.  Check out other teachers and their projects to give you ideas.  And maybe you’ll even be inspired to sponsor another teacher’s project.

The Business of Breathing

06 Apr

More research is revealing the positive impact mindfulness and quieting the mind can have on a person.  Research tells us the benefits include lowered blood pressure, higher concentration, reduced stress, increased learning capabilities, and enhanced self-confidence.

As we head into testing season, meditation, guided imagery and visualizations are great techniques to use with your students.  At Soul Shoppe we offer a special test taking strategies assembly for schools that include important tips students should know.  One of the things we share with teachers is a visualization that helps the students relax and decrease any testing anxiety they may experience.  If students can practice this visualization and others like it, they will be better prepared to de-stress themselves in any situation that puts pressure on them.  Email us for more info on our “Do Your Best” test taking assembly.

Here’s an article in USA Today that states the impact meditation can have and a few sites where we can get ideas on how to use meditation in the classroom.
