It Doesn’t Have to Come to This

18 Jun

This article about Josie Ratley’s experience is an extreme case of bullying. Before it ever comes to physical harm, before it ever comes to criminal trials, bullying causes emotional and social pain for years and years, often starting in Elementary School. Prevention is the only long-reaching solution. That’s why Soul Shoppe focuses on going into the Elementary Schools and giving kids the tools they need to create healthy social/emotional habits, and to build healthy and happy relationships with one another from the beginning. Getting bullying prevention programs into schools at the time kids first start going to school could help prevent this kind of very serious violence later on.

The Business of Breathing

06 Apr

More research is revealing the positive impact mindfulness and quieting the mind can have on a person.  Research tells us the benefits include lowered blood pressure, higher concentration, reduced stress, increased learning capabilities, and enhanced self-confidence.

As we head into testing season, meditation, guided imagery and visualizations are great techniques to use with your students.  At Soul Shoppe we offer a special test taking strategies assembly for schools that include important tips students should know.  One of the things we share with teachers is a visualization that helps the students relax and decrease any testing anxiety they may experience.  If students can practice this visualization and others like it, they will be better prepared to de-stress themselves in any situation that puts pressure on them.  Email us for more info on our “Do Your Best” test taking assembly.

Here’s an article in USA Today that states the impact meditation can have and a few sites where we can get ideas on how to use meditation in the classroom.
